Die wahre Bedeutung einer BBYO
I believe havdalah is one of the most beautiful pieces of any convention. Havdalah is specifically defined as a Jewish religious ceremony or formal prayer that marks the end of the Sabbath. However, no definition can ever describe the special connection that is felt through a BBYO havdalah. Whether it’s here at home in Greater Jersey or all the way on a passport trip in the middle of Italy, havdalah is what connects us.
During havdalah, we all stand side by side singing prayers and other songs. Each person is connected in a big circle with arms around one another. But it’s more than just a physical connection; it’s emotional. When we sing and pray together, it gives us hope, it connects us together, and it shows us that our voices are powerful together.
This year, during our GJR Fall Con 2025, I got the privilege to lead havdalah with my Shabbat committee. By far, this havdalah filled my heart the most out of all. Seeing all the hard work we put into planning come to life was magnificent. But more than that, seeing the smiles as the room lit up with the candles was absolutely inspiring.
My advice? If you have the opportunity to serve on a Shabbat committee — DO IT! This is my second year doing it, and it’s connected me so much closer to my Judaism and my community.
